In the nice sunny morning it will think " Blanket, What for?" This repeats everyday. There is no difference between that and the happenings of TamilNadu Fishermen community.

The SriLankan Navy killing TamilNadu Fishermen has become a regular affair. TN CM will write a letter to Indian PM. PM will call the SL envoy and give a stern warning. This will be relayed to SL. This football game is happening for past half century.

By the Mullivaikkal siege Mahinda Rajapakse put a full stop to Eelam Tamilains to earn a fanfare "Maha Veera"(Very Brave) title from Singhala harliners. It is not very far that he is going to get a "Maha Soora"( Very Capable) title for wiping off Tamilnadu'sfishermen. This is the loud message we get from the recent killing of Pandian, a TN fisherman.

Ocean is the Safety Net:

India has a natural safety. With ocean on all three sides and mountain on the north nature is a fort for us. There is unique wealth to TN. Only two States border TN. It is surrounded by water in other 2 sides. Chennai, Vellore, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai , Kadalur, Tanjavur, Nagai, Thiruvarur, Pudukottai are North Shore Districts.. Sivaganga, Ramanad, Tuthukudi,Nellai, Kanyakumar are south shore Districts. There is a 1125 K.M long beach line. There are about 10 Lakh( One Million) people who do business based on sea. Around 25% are deep sea fishermen. These people contribute a lot to the sea farming.
Even though they catch millions of fishes, they are poverty stricken. They still use catamarans and homemade boats yet still there is a huge count of high-speed boats. The biggest threat to their lives is not the heavy winds or the natural fury of Sea but the SriLankan army.

When did the sea became red?

In the 70s when SriLankan Tamils were marginalised and treated as second class citizens and were being subjected to genoice this started for TN fishermen. SriLankan Govt feared that TN is giving indirect support to the angry youth of SL.Till that point Indian Fishermen particularly the Rameswaram folks fish in the waters of Paruthithurai & Yalpanam(Jaffna) without any problems. These fishermen were not allowed near SL maritime boundary after the uprising. SL started arresting and then releasing the fishermen. When the uprising gained momentum, SL navy and govt started showing their anger towards these poor fishermen which they werent able to show towards LTTE. They started firing at fishermen instead of arresting.

"From 1983 to 1991 Sri Lankan Navy has attacked fishermen 236 times. 3003 boats were damaged. 51 boats were destroyed. 50+ Fishermen were dead. 136 Fishermen were injured", says a 1991 announcement. After that there were no new statistics that came out. "This is not the right statistics", differ the Rameswaram Fishermen."In the last 30 years, around 600+ fishermen have been killed", they say.

What is the reason?

SL navy used to claim the fishermen were "smugglers". LTTE "suppliers" of food, weapon and fuel. Then they started attcking them under the guise of "Stealing boats" meaning they steal fish from their boundary. When the armed struggle increased, they started calling them "Tigers". In 2001, when there was a compromise between Tigers and SL govt the attack never stopped. When Mahinda Rajapaksa became the President, the attacks increased along with the attacks on LTTE. Fishermen were killed, chased, threatned with armed weapons and violently attacked. The Central Govt of India kept repeating what the Sri Lankan Govt says " Fishermen cross the boundary, and hence getting fired".

When Pakistan, Bangladesh and Thailand fishermen reach the Indian Maritime boundaries many a time. Indian govt arrests them, informs their nation and then release them in goodwill. Why SL govt doesnt have the same goodwill? Why Indian Govt is not able to demand the same from SL?
When Sinhalese Navy* attack TamilNadu's Fishermen doesn't Indian Navy has the responsibility to safeguard the fishermen? The Indian Governments have never answered these questions of Fishermen. When a Pakistani comes inside Kashmir territory and fire, it is claimed as an attack on India. It is unacceptable when SriLankan Navy entering Rameswaram kills 600 Indians and we being silent about it.

Kachatheevu is the solution:

KachaTheevu is a beautiful island just 12 K.M from Rameswaram. Kachham means Tortoise. It seems they were abundant in that reason and henced named after them. Ramnad, Rameswaram Fishermen used to fish in these waters for centuries together. This is one among the eight islands that belonged to Ramnad Sethupathy Raja.
During British Rule it was considered as Govt's land.When SL became independant, they claimed it. But that island was never part of earlier 300 years map of Sri Lanka. Nehru refused it. But in due course, IndiraGandhi gave up the rights. Sri Lank used to back US and to appease SL and to avoid US getting a stronghold in SriLanka she handed over the island to SriLanka in 1974.

Till then there were no issues for Indian Fishermen. After that SriLankan Navy started attacking and till today they are not stopping. In the agreement that gave up the rights Indian govt got the rights for Indian fishermen to reach till Kachha theevu to take rest and to dry the fishing nets. It also lets the TN fishermen to participate in the yearly celebration at St. Antony's Church during March. Rajiv Gandhi's accord with SL also endorses this clause.

But the Navy is attacking again and again to not let the TN fishermen anywhere near the island. It is the responsibility of Central govt to question SL on this.

Jayalalitha moved and passed a resolution in state assemly to get back KachaTheevu. In 2007, when a fisherman was killed Karunanidhi said "It is time to win back Kacha Theevu". The bloodshed will stop only when they walk the talk.

What the fishermen can do?

Fishermen's logical claim is "We dont know the maritime boundary. So we may be crossing the boundary and the catch is good in far seas". M.K. Narayanan, PM's Security Advicer himself accepted this. " It is not correct that fishermen cross the boundary. But any fisherman will go to the place where the fishes are abundant. So can someone stop the fishermen who cross both Indian and SL maritime boundaries to catch fish? If fishermen cross a boundary why SL navy has to fire at them? Dont fire Dont Kill fishermen is the request we have put with Srilankan Govt. They have agreed" claimed M.K.Narayanan.

But still the atrocity contnues. Three years back to avoid this problem Karunanidhi threatend " If this continutes, our fishermen's hand will not hold only the fish...!"

But, does he remember that now?

I feel apple products are too much hyped, priced to a disgusting level( they follow the scarcity marketing technique and premium pricing)

They have better user experience interface, no doubt.

I take stuff whichever suits me. I got an e-reader(for free, in a way) instead of buying a 500$ ipad for that. I prefer sticking to company provided Blackberry to avoid all the useless apps that take away my personal time :-))

W.r.t Technology: There is nothing called a perfect technology. Everything comes with its own flaws.

I believe in looking beyond the peer pressure and marketing gimmicks

Pay Phone Fraud

Made a call from LHR airport to US and got charged $20 in credit card for 2 mins of call. Searched online and there are class action suits.People also suggest to call them and blast them. The reason the give is it is a satellite call and information on the likely call charges for using a credit card will be provided only when you ask for it to the operator. They wont provide it voluntarily. The coin phone charges are way below. So when I started asking about logic behind this, information hiding, class action suits etc.,magically "after a hold" a 5 $ credit was given. And after further poking another 2 $ credit was given. Ask and it will be given :-))

You cannot fool all the people all the time. Good Job Biharis but giving a direction for the leaders in India that when development happens people echo support for it.
I agree Lalu was a good Railway minister as he listned to Executive recommendations and did few good things for Railways but on the contrary he didnt bother Executive when he ruled Bihar for a decade or so.He just played plain vanilla politics and the dangerous Caste politics. Lalu holds sole responsibility for Bihar's horrible image and state of affairs
People of sidelined congress for doing nothing for the state.

Nitish did make changes and has improved Bihar a great deal, if we can believe the statistics and the overall feedback. A word of caution, he seems to overly rely on Executive. He can do some course correction and appease the unsatisfied section. We have democracy for a purpose. He should listen to his Ministers. He can do a course correction for first year and go on high pedal later on all angle.

And... what I liked most of him now is this statement reacting to Victory "We have no magic wand, but people’s trust. I will need to work harder than I did in the last five years and I will not hesitate to do it. ". Spoke like a true leader!!!.

Nehru and his costly mistakes

When leaders make mistakes it lasts longer. Nehru was a statesman ( may be the first & last India had). His early decisions made marvels in India and his concept of socialism impacted India in the long run but the decision was wise. It was prolonged by successive hero worshippers who didnt have much worldly view and the impact it created cannot be attributed to him. It was a shared mistake and Indira Gandhi is not wiser like Nehru. But I believe, Nehru made a mistake by taking Kashmir to UN. It was a half-hearted effort.

Today I learnt that "India was offered a permanent seat on the council 55 years ago, in 1955. But that offer, made by the United States and the Soviet Union, was declined by India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru said the seat should be given to China instead"

What a himalayan blunder? What is the reason? Need to read further.

1. Bad things first.

-- I miss Sujatha for the sharp and smart dialogues in many important scens. Or atleast this may be my prejudice because of my realization that "Vathiyaar "was no more by end of the film production.

-- The musquito scene. As if someone did the graphics as their pet project and "inserted" that scene into the film.

-- the stupid coffee serving mini robo with horrible techno voice (i guess may be Shankar bought an actual robo available today in market and used it and we dont like reality anyways )

----horrible BGM in fight scene with "yezham arivu..araam arivu.. etc.,"

--- Charecterization of Karunas and Santhanam as stooges working in a high profile project

-- Aishwarya Rai. So old. she looks older than Rajini sometimes.

--- I miss Raghuvaran. Danny doesnt do good enough justice with the stone face. Sometime Danny looked like a Robot himself. Would have loved Rahuvaran as the "bad professor" would ahve been rocking.

Anyways, I dont need to elaborate that the Zeno the robo dog is the Chitti in this movie.. i think so atleast.

--- Rajini dances. this is a paradox here. The robo rajini dances very well. the real Rajini dances like a robo normally, as usual.

1. Every day 50 Farmers suicides because "they dont have right on seeds, land, selling price or their produce" ,

2. Every day 5000 children die because of malnutrition of feeding mothers and children.

3. India just oversaw a genocide in SriLanka.

4. It took 5 hours to respond to one of the worst terrorist attacks.

4. Couldnt deliver what was promised to Kashmiris. And we are killing civilians and show up ourselves as aggressors.

5. One of the pillars of democracy has collapsed long back. The Indian Judiciary is a joke. We have 30,000,000( 30 million or 3 crore) unresolved disputes in Indian Courts.

Finally, no North Indian ever understands why someone has to bother about point number 3 above and any South Indian understand the issue at Mizoram. So I have a question Who is an Indian and What is India, then may be I will understand What is the Shame for India?

Woes of Income Tax Filing in India

1. Hardly any time between your Form 16 and Form 16A availability and End date. And there is no mandate that Form16 and 16A needs to given by a specific time.

2. Banks dont care. You need to run around to get 16A. Bank has no deadline as such for issuing 16A and you are lucky if you get it in time. Many people just don’t show their interest income. Who gives a damn?

3. The ITR spreadsheets are pretty confusing for a novice user. Some data doesn’t get automatically filled and don’t which one goes where for what? Need an accountant and who is well versed with the sheet.

4. The pdf that explains ITR spreadsheets have rarely any material use. Very little detail.

5. The fine levied is totally atrocious. Already middle class maniacs feel Govt punishes ONLY Salaried class and the bloody fine is totally totally a repellant to encourage endangered species namely loyal, honest taxpayer.

6. You still need to pay a visit to the Income tax office if you file it yourself AND if you dont have a digital signature.

7. The office is conveniently (for the "taxers" not the "taxees" :-))) closed on Weekends AND follows only official work timings on weekdays AND only few centers for an entire city.

8.If you need a digital signature you need to pay.( Is this tax deductible..Forget it. How long it is valid? I cannot use this anywhere else. Totally useless for an ordinary netizen)

9. Easiest option is to pay the accountants who mint money (200-300 bucks per person) which should be a simple ritual of fill the form and get it stamped.

10. On top of all these there is no guarantee that accounts won’t file a wrong tax return. Seen friends running back and forth to correct issues. Again another repellent for endangered species.

Obama, Outsourcing and Boat people !!

When the pressure increases the volume decreases, science taught me so. But it is applicable in all economics right now.Today,there is pressure everywhere and they pull back their hands in spending except for Mr. President of US of A. He is spending more. He got a raw deal, no doubt. As some stand up comedian mentioned during campaign, only an Afro-American man know how to run a family with nothing. Barack Hussein Obama is running US family in a backrupt environment. Yeah I did back John McCain but that shows how even an obscure state in India is showing interest in happenings at US because of close knit society we are in now. But in all due fairness that Mr.Obama deserves I would dare not assess him within the honeymoon period (46 days) in all dimensions. But since my very good friend kicked up a good discussion I tried to post a comment on that but it outgrew to a blogpost.

Let me give the gist of the blogpost, the way I understand. By doing away outsourcing, by putting barriers, US is going to loose. The point is, companies will eventually increase their opeartional cost. But good companies adapt as soon as possible. I am not naive to believe the lobby groups will force govt to get some bypass on the outsourcing barriers or H1s or L1s. I dont even believe that Obama is doing a make-believe that he wants to appease the middle class voters as the total outsourcing deal is miniscule(all of Indian Software and Services is 71 Billion)compared to the overall american economy(size of 14.2 Trillion)

So is it that only the cost the only attribute in deciding all these? Cost and inter-related tax fuelled economic recovery is only one factor. The amount of tax delivered to US Govt via the H1,L1 guys will be miniscule for sure. I am not going to talk about that. I would try to see from at least 3 main stakeholders again only on single dimension of technology outsourcing because
all other forms of outsourcing like manufacturing, food, electronics and clothing are somehow been digested, already.

First let us talk about, employees of USA Inc., who get really mad before you say H1. They are are being challenged by Obama, not exactly by Obama though. The downturn has challenged them. And they are responding very well. When the dot com burst happened, technology outsourcing to India went up. Reason is, outsourcing increases not only because funds dry up. Also, corporates need solutions, prep up competition, customer delight at the very same moment when industry is in turmoil. So it is a double whammy. Both of these are provided by Indian firms. You want Java security expert, here is 100s of them. You want a consultant for determining what is right for your law firm at 50% discount. You got it. There is actual dearth for these in US at lower cost. Obama is trying to fix that by putting the "oomph" in the school system right now. He is encouraging kids to go to college by providing more scholarships. You will see the dearth vanish 10 years from now if the rhetoric just is not a rhetoric. Yesterday(6th March 09) Obama said it is "bipartisan no-brainer" to train and fill shortage of nurses in US internally, instead of bringing boat people. Same is the line of thinking for high tech jobs, but it will not hurt because they block H1-Bs tomorrow. This and this is what actually going hurt the employees of US in future. But they are responding to the immidiate threat by coming forward to reduce the salary. So the options before US folks is simple, take the new training funds. Retrain in new skills or reduce your salary and stay put. Now Indians are challenged back.

So what is in stake for Indians when all these background work is done by the President and US is trying to put barriers. I think the easy solution is hit back. I will come to that in a moment. Actually for american economy and the actual job market, doing away with technology outsourcing deal is actually solving miniscule problem (but who cares of numbers, huh? We need a Villain thats it). But for boat people life is not always that easy, ever. And a huge economic growth route is getting blocked. My take is India will emerge stronger in terms of most the challenges. It is going to be a short term starting trouble. There are unchartered territories in real terms. In fact, my prediction is that operations may totally move to India, China or Europe, if the walls get thicker and higher. Asian companies will try to become world leader and India has to watch out for that. I believe some countries will start incentivising which are waiting for the demise of super power economy. So I dont sweat about that a lot. Another best and easy option available is, effectivly utilizing the returning NRI folks. They should be challenged, incentivised, supported and encoruaged well enough to create an environment for new ventures. All those locker money have to come out with India showing 7% growth rate.

It is time to look inside. Can you name an industry in India which doesnt need innovation, fresh blood and improvement. Security, Law, Agriculture, Infrastructure. Oh, I can go on and on for another ten pages where we have to figure out the "Indian way". All these rich knowledge in science, technology and business brains should be utilised. India 2.0 is easily possible. Short term - take the hit and retrain for new areas. Start living the Indian dream and way.

US Govt has not spelt out what exactly is in the minds of corridors of power. But they are under tremendous pressure because of public opinion. So assuming the outsourcing is going to put hardships for "boat people" lets see the other party, the Indian Govt. It is actually in lame-duck shape. Seriously, as the elections are approaching. I would love to see Kamal Nath back as commerce minister. The "hitting back" I talked about earlier is going to be very very interesting in future WTO summits (will it happen?). Already last time India bullied the western nations with backing from Hugo Chavezes and the African nations. Western countries are waiting for their part of the bargaining as the semi-socialist nations kept their barriers intact. So the options are increasing for these third world nations to fight back. India can raise barriers for commodity trading american companies doing business in India. Right now, Western nations are trying to have their own barriers and now they will still be hit if the import from industrialised nations are blocked in some form or other. I meant confidently, I wont sweat out because if India plays its cards well India can still get away with the whole outsourcing threat. Western nations have manufacturing power and third world nations have human resources power.

For boat loads of goods, rich nations should agree upon to trade for boat loads of people. You can trade with only what you have. Is it not fair enough?

Are you patriotic? How do you show it?

Okay here is how it goes on a typical patriotic day. As usual I go to office browse the internet check the emails read the news and ooh.. what is that..
Oh.. Oh here there is a lady who uses the flag as footmat. Let us jot down a mail and send a million copies and there goes my patriotic itch. So what you call this?
Aah.. I forgot that.. we do show our patriotic ferver whenever there is a cricket match.

yeah, what is wrong.. if India wins we are proud.we do run victory processions, wave the flag and do all sort of stuff..

Ah...na... See Mr. Gandhi, here is the problem they dont give a holiday on that day. So what can we do? Last time when it came we had an important delivery to our US customer what can I do? See you understand the trouble and sometimes there were good movies during those holidays even if they give one.

If the same patriotic ferver among all those who actually forwarded these mails came on the same day, the voting day, every election that happened so far, India would have changed forever. Am I right?

Remarks of Bill Gates: Harvard Commencement

President Bok, former President Rudenstine, incoming President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, parents, and especially, the graduates:

I've been waiting more than 30 years to say this: "Dad, I always told you I'd come back and get my degree."

I want to thank Harvard for this timely honor. I'll be changing my job next year … and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume.

I applaud the graduates today for taking a much more direct route to your degrees. For my part, I'm just happy that the Crimson has called me "Harvard's most successful dropout." I guess that makes me valedictorian of my own special class … I did the best of everyone who failed.

But I also want to be recognized as the guy who got Steve Ballmer to drop out of business school. I'm a bad influence. That's why I was invited to speak at your graduation. If I had spoken at your orientation, fewer of you might be here today.

Harvard was just a phenomenal experience for me. Academic life was fascinating. I used to sit in on lots of classes I hadn't even signed up for. And dorm life was terrific. I lived up at Radcliffe, in Currier House. There were always lots of people in my dorm room late at night discussing things, because everyone knew I didn't worry about getting up in the morning. That's how I came to be the leader of the anti-social group. We clung to each other as a way of validating our rejection of all those social people.

Radcliffe was a great place to live. There were more women up there, and most of the guys were science-math types. That combination offered me the best odds, if you know what I mean. This is where I learned the sad lesson that improving your odds doesn't guarantee success.

One of my biggest memories of Harvard came in January 1975, when I made a call from Currier House to a company in Albuquerque that had begun making the world's first personal computers. I offered to sell them software.

I worried that they would realize I was just a student in a dorm and hang up on me. Instead they said: "We're not quite ready, come see us in a month," which was a good thing, because we hadn't written the software yet. From that moment, I worked day and night on this little extra credit project that marked the end of my college education and the beginning of a remarkable journey with Microsoft.

What I remember above all about Harvard was being in the midst of so much energy and intelligence. It could be exhilarating, intimidating, sometimes even discouraging, but always challenging. It was an amazing privilege – and though I left early, I was transformed by my years at Harvard, the friendships I made, and the ideas I worked on.

But taking a serious look back … I do have one big regret.

I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities in the world – the appalling disparities of health, and wealth, and opportunity that condemn millions of people to lives of despair.

I learned a lot here at Harvard about new ideas in economics and politics. I got great exposure to the advances being made in the sciences.

But humanity's greatest advances are not in its discoveries – but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity. Whether through democracy, strong public education, quality health care, or broad economic opportunity – reducing inequity is the highest human achievement.

I left campus knowing little about the millions of young people cheated out of educational opportunities here in this country. And I knew nothing about the millions of people living in unspeakable poverty and disease in developing countries.

It took me decades to find out.

You graduates came to Harvard at a different time. You know more about the world's inequities than the classes that came before. In your years here, I hope you've had a chance to think about how – in this age of accelerating technology – we can finally take on these inequities, and we can solve them.

Imagine, just for the sake of discussion, that you had a few hours a week and a few dollars a month to donate to a cause – and you wanted to spend that time and money where it would have the greatest impact in saving and improving lives. Where would you spend it?

For Melinda and for me, the challenge is the same: how can we do the most good for the greatest number with the resources we have.

During our discussions on this question, Melinda and I read an article about the millions of children who were dying every year in poor countries from diseases that we had long ago made harmless in this country. Measles, malaria, pneumonia, hepatitis B, yellow fever. One disease I had never even heard of, rotavirus, was killing half a million kids each year – none of them in the United States.

We were shocked. We had just assumed that if millions of children were dying and they could be saved, the world would make it a priority to discover and deliver the medicines to save them. But it did not. For under a dollar, there were interventions that could save lives that just weren't being delivered.

If you believe that every life has equal value, it's revolting to learn that some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not. We said to ourselves: "This can't be true. But if it is true, it deserves to be the priority of our giving."

So we began our work in the same way anyone here would begin it. We asked: "How could the world let these children die?"

The answer is simple, and harsh. The market did not reward saving the lives of these children, and governments did not subsidize it. So the children died because their mothers and their fathers had no power in the market and no voice in the system.

But you and I have both.

We can make market forces work better for the poor if we can develop a more creative capitalism – if we can stretch the reach of market forces so that more people can make a profit, or at least make a living, serving people who are suffering from the worst inequities. We also can press governments around the world to spend taxpayer money in ways that better reflect the values of the people who pay the taxes.

If we can find approaches that meet the needs of the poor in ways that generate profits for business and votes for politicians, we will have found a sustainable way to reduce inequity in the world. This task is open-ended. It can never be finished. But a conscious effort to answer this challenge will change the world.

I am optimistic that we can do this, but I talk to skeptics who claim there is no hope. They say: "Inequity has been with us since the beginning, and will be with us till the end – because people just … don't … care." I completely disagree.

I believe we have more caring than we know what to do with.

All of us here in this Yard, at one time or another, have seen human tragedies that broke our hearts, and yet we did nothing – not because we didn't care, but because we didn't know what to do. If we had known how to help, we would have acted.

The barrier to change is not too little caring; it is too much complexity.

To turn caring into action, we need to see a problem, see a solution, and see the impact. But complexity blocks all three steps.

Even with the advent of the Internet and 24-hour news, it is still a complex enterprise to get people to truly see the problems. When an airplane crashes, officials immediately call a press conference. They promise to investigate, determine the cause, and prevent similar crashes in the future.

But if the officials were brutally honest, they would say: "Of all the people in the world who died today from preventable causes, one half of one percent of them were on this plane. We're determined to do everything possible to solve the problem that took the lives of the one half of one percent."

The bigger problem is not the plane crash, but the millions of preventable deaths.

We don't read much about these deaths. The media covers what's new – and millions of people dying is nothing new. So it stays in the background, where it's easier to ignore. But even when we do see it or read about it, it's difficult to keep our eyes on the problem. It's hard to look at suffering if the situation is so complex that we don't know how to help. And so we look away.

If we can really see a problem, which is the first step, we come to the second step: cutting through the complexity to find a solution.

Finding solutions is essential if we want to make the most of our caring. If we have clear and proven answers anytime an organization or individual asks "How can I help?," then we can get action – and we can make sure that none of the caring in the world is wasted. But complexity makes it hard to mark a path of action for everyone who cares — and that makes it hard for their caring to matter.

Cutting through complexity to find a solution runs through four predictable stages: determine a goal, find the highest-leverage approach, discover the ideal technology for that approach, and in the meantime, make the smartest application of the technology that you already have — whether it's something sophisticated, like a drug, or something simpler, like a bednet.

The AIDS epidemic offers an example. The broad goal, of course, is to end the disease. The highest-leverage approach is prevention. The ideal technology would be a vaccine that gives lifetime immunity with a single dose. So governments, drug companies, and foundations fund vaccine research. But their work is likely to take more than a decade, so in the meantime, we have to work with what we have in hand – and the best prevention approach we have now is getting people to avoid risky behavior.

Pursuing that goal starts the four-step cycle again. This is the pattern. The crucial thing is to never stop thinking and working – and never do what we did with malaria and tuberculosis in the 20th century – which is to surrender to complexity and quit.

The final step – after seeing the problem and finding an approach – is to measure the impact of your work and share your successes and failures so that others learn from your efforts.

You have to have the statistics, of course. You have to be able to show that a program is vaccinating millions more children. You have to be able to show a decline in the number of children dying from these diseases. This is essential not just to improve the program, but also to help draw more investment from business and government.

But if you want to inspire people to participate, you have to show more than numbers; you have to convey the human impact of the work – so people can feel what saving a life means to the families affected.

I remember going to Davos some years back and sitting on a global health panel that was discussing ways to save millions of lives. Millions! Think of the thrill of saving just one person's life – then multiply that by millions. … Yet this was the most boring panel I've ever been on – ever. So boring even I couldn't bear it.

What made that experience especially striking was that I had just come from an event where we were introducing version 13 of some piece of software, and we had people jumping and shouting with excitement. I love getting people excited about software – but why can't we generate even more excitement for saving lives?

You can't get people excited unless you can help them see and feel the impact. And how you do that – is a complex question.

Still, I'm optimistic. Yes, inequity has been with us forever, but the new tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us forever. They are new – they can help us make the most of our caring – and that's why the future can be different from the past.

The defining and ongoing innovations of this age – biotechnology, the computer, the Internet – give us a chance we've never had before to end extreme poverty and end death from preventable disease.

Sixty years ago, George Marshall came to this commencement and announced a plan to assist the nations of post-war Europe. He said: "I think one difficulty is that the problem is one of such enormous complexity that the very mass of facts presented to the public by press and radio make it exceedingly difficult for the man in the street to reach a clear appraisement of the situation. It is virtually impossible at this distance to grasp at all the real significance of the situation."

Thirty years after Marshall made his address, as my class graduated without me, technology was emerging that would make the world smaller, more open, more visible, less distant.

The emergence of low-cost personal computers gave rise to a powerful network that has transformed opportunities for learning and communicating.

The magical thing about this network is not just that it collapses distance and makes everyone your neighbor. It also dramatically increases the number of brilliant minds we can have working together on the same problem – and that scales up the rate of innovation to a staggering degree.

At the same time, for every person in the world who has access to this technology, five people don't. That means many creative minds are left out of this discussion -- smart people with practical intelligence and relevant experience who don't have the technology to hone their talents or contribute their ideas to the world.

We need as many people as possible to have access to this technology, because these advances are triggering a revolution in what human beings can do for one another. They are making it possible not just for national governments, but for universities, corporations, smaller organizations, and even individuals to see problems, see approaches, and measure the impact of their efforts to address the hunger, poverty, and desperation George Marshall spoke of 60 years ago.

Members of the Harvard Family: Here in the Yard is one of the great collections of intellectual talent in the world.

What for?

There is no question that the faculty, the alumni, the students, and the benefactors of Harvard have used their power to improve the lives of people here and around the world. But can we do more? Can Harvard dedicate its intellect to improving the lives of people who will never even hear its name?

Let me make a request of the deans and the professors – the intellectual leaders here at Harvard: As you hire new faculty, award tenure, review curriculum, and determine degree requirements, please ask yourselves:

Should our best minds be dedicated to solving our biggest problems?

Should Harvard encourage its faculty to take on the world's worst inequities? Should Harvard students learn about the depth of global poverty … the prevalence of world hunger … the scarcity of clean water …the girls kept out of school … the children who die from diseases we can cure?

Should the world's most privileged people learn about the lives of the world's least privileged?

These are not rhetorical questions – you will answer with your policies.

My mother, who was filled with pride the day I was admitted here – never stopped pressing me to do more for others. A few days before my wedding, she hosted a bridal event, at which she read aloud a letter about marriage that she had written to Melinda. My mother was very ill with cancer at the time, but she saw one more opportunity to deliver her message, and at the close of the letter she said: "From those to whom much is given, much is expected."

When you consider what those of us here in this Yard have been given – in talent, privilege, and opportunity – there is almost no limit to what the world has a right to expect from us.

In line with the promise of this age, I want to exhort each of the graduates here to take on an issue – a complex problem, a deep inequity, and become a specialist on it. If you make it the focus of your career, that would be phenomenal. But you don't have to do that to make an impact. For a few hours every week, you can use the growing power of the Internet to get informed, find others with the same interests, see the barriers, and find ways to cut through them.

Don't let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on the big inequities. It will be one of the great experiences of your lives.

You graduates are coming of age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you likely also have an informed conscience that will torment you if you abandon these people whose lives you could change with very little effort. You have more than we had; you must start sooner, and carry on longer.

Knowing what you know, how could you not?

And I hope you will come back here to Harvard 30 years from now and reflect on what you have done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you have addressed the world's deepest inequities … on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity.
